We hope the information below will help you better understand these terms.
Electrician training has three levels:
Apprentice Electrician
An Apprentice is an entry-level electrician who works under the instruction of a master electrician. A journeyman and a master electrician have similar roles, but they are different in a few major ways.
Journeyman Electrician
A Journeyman is a skilled electrician and can work independently under the general direction of a master electrician.
Master Electrician
A Master Electrician has additional freedom and responsibilities. Journeyman and Master electricians are different in a few major ways, although their roles are similar.
Journeyman & Master Electricians
Journeyman electricians have completed around 8000 hours of training, under the guidance and supervision of a master electrician. The training to achieve journeyman licensing takes 4 years to accomplish. A journeyman may not supervise other journeyman. A journeyman electrician is licensed to work without supervision while doing minor electrical work such as:
Installing electrical outlets, wiring, and fixtures
Addressing circuit breaker problems
Fixing the electrical supply for non-functioning lights
Completing electric service work
Master electricians have 2 years of additional supervised training, and must also take classes. After their supervised training is complete, a journeyman must take classes to earn a master electrician certification at an educational institution or through an industry training program. A journeyman must also pass a test to become a licensed master electrician.
Master electricians are highly educated. Their advanced education covers electricity fundamentals, building codes, project management, and safety regulations. Master electrician’s roles and responsibilities include:
Design and layout of wiring systems
Determining the type of wiring, connections, or terminations needed
Designing the routing of circuits in electrical panels
Supervising apprentices and journeymen
A master electrician has the ability to run his own company or work as a contractor. By law, a master electrician is required to maintain insurance coverage as a contractor.
